Parkinson’s Disease


Parkinson’s disease is a disease of nervous system in which there occurs low levels of dopamine in brain cells. Parkinson’s disease usually affects people above the age of sixty years. But age is no bar, it can affect person of any age, as the cases of Parkinson’s disease are also found among young or middle age patients but old age people are affected more, especially people above the age of sixty years.



Parkinson’s disease has some diagnostic signs and symptoms which help in the diagnosis of disease and also help in differentiating it from other diseases are as follow-

1.   Low levels of dopamine are found in the brain cells of people suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

2.   Parkinson’s disease patients usually have tremors of limbs, fingers and numbness of hands at rest. Some patients have tremors of hands, some have tremors of fingers only and some have tremors of head and some have tremors of jaw. But main differentiating point of these tremors from other diseases is that these tremors occur only at rest, as soon as the patient starts doing some work or activity these tremors disappear.

3.   Parkinson’s disease also have genetic predisposition. Chances of suffering from Parkinson’s disease are more if you have any family member suffering from disease.

4.   Patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease usually have stiffness of the parts or joints in which tremors occur. Muscular rigidity of the joints affected by tremors of the Parkinson’s disease.

5.   Slowness of voluntary movements of joints affected by Parkinson’s disease. Slowness of movements occurs due to muscular rigidity.

6.   Some secondary symptoms which are found associated with this disease are anxiety, stress, depression and constipation.

7.   Head injuries predispose to Parkinson’s disease. Chances of suffering from Parkinson’s disease increase if you have past history of head injury or trauma.

8.   Side effects of some drugs, which have toxic effects on body increases the chances of suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
