You must have listened about irritable bowel syndrome. Today we will discuss, what are easy steps to confirm irritable bowel syndrome, but before that let's know what is known as irritable bowel syndrome?


Irritable bowel syndrome is a bowel disorder in which there occurs changes in gastrointestinal motility and visceral sensation. Which produces various set of symptoms and signs which are collectively given name of irritable bowel syndrome.

Now, what are various easy steps to confirm irritable bowel syndrome? What are various easy steps or measures with help of which you can easily identify whether irritable bowel syndrome is occurring in a patient or not?

The easy steps which help in confirming irritable bowel syndrome occurring in a patient are-

1.      Symptoms-  
Symptoms which help in confirming, identifying irritable bowel syndrome are-
  • Abdominal pain is very common symptom which is most often complained by patient. And that’s not all this abdominal pain occur on recurrent basis. Patient complaints of recurrent, repeated episodes of abdominal pain.
  • And this abdominal pain occurs in lower abdomen not whole abdomen and this abdominal pain is relieved after defecating.
  • Another symptoms which patient complaints is constipation and diarrhea. And both of these symptoms occur on alternate basis. That is patients says sometimes there is constipation and sometimes there is diarrhea and they occur on alternate basis. And patient cannot completely differentiate whether there is more of constipation episodes or diarrhea episodes, one thing which he can clearly told you that they are occurring on alternate basis.
  • There occurs mucus along with feces in stool.
  •  Abdominal distension is also there, patient usually complaints of gas is abdomen, he says abdomen is usually full of gas all time.
  • One more problem which patient complains of that he fells that bowels are not emptied fully, there is incomplete defecation.
     

2.      Laboratory investigations or tests-
Another step which help in confirming irritable bowel syndrome are laboratory investigations, laboratory tests. The various investigations or laboratory tests which help in confirming, identifying irritable bowel syndrome are-
  •  Full blood count- if done on routine basis can identify irritable bowel syndrome.
  • ESR test that is erythrocyte sedimentation rate test also if done on routine basis just like full blood count test can identify, can confirm irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Sigmoidoscopy- can be done on routine basis to identify, confirm irritable bowel syndrome.
  •  Barium enema colonoscopy- done in older patients only to confirm irritable bowel syndrome and also to confirm whether a person is suffering from colo-rectal cancer or not.
  • Colonoscopy- is also done to confirm irritable bowel syndrome.
