Which Tests are done, during Antenatal Check-Ups of, a Pregnant Woman?


You must have seen that a number of tests, are instructed to a pregnant woman; to get done, by her gynaecologist during pregnancy. Do you know, what are names of these tests?

If you don't know, then here are list of those tests, which a pregnant woman is instructed to get done-

Haemoglobin test-

Yes, this test is most often recommended, to pregnant woman; to get checked because haemoglobin of most women in India, is below normal before pregnancy and in pregnancy, you know haemoglobin of every woman falls, drastically. To know, how much haemoglobin have falled, haemoglobin test is instructed; so that according to that iron therapy can be started.

2) Urine test as well as urine culture test-

Like haemoglobin level fluctuates, below normal in pregnancy. Similarly, blood sugar level and albumin level, also fluctuates; to know, how much fluctuations have occurred, in their values, urine test is advised. For what purpose, urine culture is advised? Urine culture test is instructed to detect, any urinary tract infection, a pregnant woman is suffering or not.

Blood test to detect blood sugar levels, TSH and blood group-

Yes, blood sample of a pregnant woman is taken; to detect fluctuations in blood sugar level, on empty stomach as well as postprandial. Similarly, to detect fluctuations of thyroid hormones, TSH test is done and to detect which blood group, pregnant woman have; blood group test is done.

Ultrasound named TVS, dual test and triple test, for foetal monitoring-

Yes, all these 3 tests are done for foetal monitoring. Out of them, TVS ultrasound is done first, before dual test is done. This ultrasound is called Level I ultrasound, which detect gestational age of foetus as well as, foetus's well-being; whether foetus is healthy or suffering from any disease. Second ultrasound is done, after triple test is done, called Level II ultrasound, done for same purpose; for which Level I ultrasound is done and that is, foetal monitoring.

Serum calcium test-

To detect fluctuations, in blood calcium level of a pregnant woman; as its values also fluctuates, during pregnancy.
