8 Types of Rheumatism that are commonly found

In last article I told you what actually rheumatism is and what are its 4 common types, out of 11 common types. Today, I will discuss rest of 8 common types of rheumatic diseases that are also common. They are-

1) Polymyalgia rheumatica-

In this pain, inflammation, swelling and stiffness occur, like in any other rheumatic disease. It usually affects aged group and atleast two body parts.
  • Tests done to diagnose this disease are anti-CCP, ANA test, CBC, ESR, CRP and RA factor test.

2) Ankylosing spondylitis-

This type of rheumatic disease mostly affects younger age group, ranging to 30 years of age. The joint arena that it affects is sacroiliac joints that come under lower back and surrounding hips.
  • What causes this type of rheumatic disease? Prolonged sitting in one position and no exercise at all is cause of it. 
  • What are identifying symptoms of this disease? Well, they are pain in lower back and hips, along with stiffness during rest and on first motion. Pain sometimes can extend to neck or shoulder blades. 
  • What are identifying tests to diagnose this disease? Well, they are x-ray of sacroiliac joints and blood tests named HLA-B27 test.

3) Sjogren’s syndrome-

Sjogren’s syndrome is that rheumatic syndrome that sometimes occur singly and sometimes with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • The cause of this syndrome is again autoimmunity. 
  • Identifying symptoms of this syndrome are dry eyes, dry mouth, pain and stiffness in joints that it affects, tooth decay and swollen glands. 
  • Tests that are done to diagnose this disease is biopsy of tissue of inner lip.

4) Psoriatic arthritis-

It is caused out of autoimmunity.  The joints that it affects sometimes have psoriasis skin and sometimes not. Sometimes it affects joints of one side and sometimes of both sides. But, sometimes it affects only distal finger joints. Like, other rheumatic diseases the joints that it affects are painful swollen and stiff.
  • Tests done to diagnose this disease is x-ray, biopsy of affected  joint, CRP test, ESR test and RA factor test.

5) Gout-

It is that type of rheumatic disease, which is caused by increase of uric acid levels in your body. It affects big toe, knee ankle, wrists and elbow and fingers.
  • Like any other rheumatic disease, it also have symptoms like, pain, swelling and stiffness of joints. 
  • Tests done to diagnose it are uric acid test, synovial fluid test of affected joint, X-ray of affected joint, CBC and RA factor test. Differentiating point is that its pain occur suddenly at night. 

6) Scleroderma-

It is that type of rheumatic disease in which skin sometimes of local area and sometimes of whole body hardened. Not only skin harden, but also tissue, muscle, bones, blood vessels below that.
  • Identifying symptoms are calcium lumps beanth skin, dry skin, dry eye, dry mouth, dry vagina, swollen joints, heart and lung problem. 
  • Identifying tests are- ANA test, ACA test, Scl-70 antibody test. 

7) Infectious arthritis-

It is that type of rheumatic disease that is caused out of infection of synovial fluid of a joint.
  • Identifying symptoms are pain, swelling and stiffness of joint. Most commonly affected joint is knee, others are also affected, but knee is more common. 
  • Tests done to diagnose it are synovial fluid test, X-ray and MRI of affected joint. 

8) Juvenile idiopathic arthritis-

This disease as name juvenile suggests affects children. It is caused because of autoimmunity.
  • Identifying symptoms are pain, swelling and stiffness and inflammation of joints. Inflammation not only involves joint area, but also other organs and tissues too. 
  • Identifying tests are sore ESR, anti-CCP, ANA test, CBC test, RA factor, HLA-B27 test, X-ray, CT or sometimes MRI tests.
