First, let’s discuss health benefits of beetroot, which are as follow –

  • Boost immunity – Beetroot contains antioxidants, which boost your body immunity. When food is digested in body, then some harmful free radicals are produced in body. These free radicals, when accumulate in body, they cause disease. Antioxidants remove these harmful free-radicals from your body.  
  • Prevents anemia – due to iron present in it.
  • Gives energy to do work – by supplying carbohydrates, which on catabolism gives energy. 
  • Helps in formation of bones – by supplying calcium and phosphorus.
  • Prevents constipationby supplying fiber.
  • Prevents malnutrition by supplying all the necessary nutrients.

What is right amount to eat it? You can eat 1 beetroot in a day. That is, safe amount to eat. But, if you eat more than it, then it can cause harms. What harms it causes?

 

Harms of beetroot, if eaten in excess –

If you eat beetroot in excess amount, then it can cause following harms

  • Diarrhea – When you eat beetroot in excess, then it can cause loose motion. This occurs due to excess fiber intake, which causes frequent bowel movements,  resulting in diarrhea.
  • Pink stools – When you eat beetroot in excess amount, then it can cause pink stools.
  • Diabetes – A small amount of sugar is present in beetroot. If you eat beetroot in excess amount, then it can cause diabetes. This occurs due to sudden excess sugar intake, due to eating excess amount of beetroot, causing spike in your blood sugar level. 
  • Pain in abdomen
  • Bloating or flatulent abdomen.
  • Vitamin A toxicity – Eating beetroot in excess amount, can increase vitamin A level in your body. That can cause symptoms of vitamin A toxicity in your body.

 

People who should not eat beetroot –

People, who suffer from certain diseases, should not eat beetroot. Those diseases are –

  • Kidney stones – Beetroot contains oxalates. Oxalates helps in formation of kidney stones. If you eat beetroot in excess amount on daily basis, then, it can cause kidney stones. Or, worsen your symptoms of kidney stones, if you already suffer from kidney stones on eating it.
  • Low blood pressure – Beetroot have tendency to lower blood pressure, when you eat it. If you already suffer from low blood pressure, then on eating it, it will further lower your blood pressure, below lowest normal range.
  • Allergies – Those who have history of allergy from beetroot, should not eat it. It will cause symptoms of beetroot allergy in them. 
  • Vitamin A toxicity – If you beetroot in excess amount on daily basis, then it increases level of vitamin A in your body causing symptoms of vitamin A toxicity. 
  • Gastointestial disorders 
  • Gout 

 

People who should eat beetroot –

People, who suffer from certain diseases, can eat beetroot. It helps in preventing those diseases. Those diseases are –

  • Anaemia – It prevents anaemia by supplying iron, preventing iron deficiency anaemia. 
  • Boost immunity – It boosts immunity by supplying, vitamin C, which booats body immunity. 
  • Constipaation – It supplies good amount of fiber, which prevents constipation. 
  • High blood pressure 
  • High cholesterol level

What is right way to eat beetroot, juice form or salad form or cooked form?

Right way to eat beetroot is juice form. You get maximum nutrients of beetroot in this form. You can add 1-inch piece of ginger, while making beetroot juice for better digestibility of juice.
  • Whereas, in salad form, some nutrients are missed, due to hard to digest.
  • Whereas in cooked form, a lot of nutrients are lost, while cooking beetroot. Also a toxic substance is formed, while cooking it.
