Aortic Regurgitation

Aortic regurgitation is due to disease of aortic valve cusps or dilatation of the aortic root. The left ventricle dilates and hypertrophies to compensate for the regurgitation.

Symptoms-

1. Increased stroke volume.

2. Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea.

3. Peripheral oedema.

4. Angina.

5. Systolic murmur.

6. Heart failure.

7. Tachycardia.

8. Abrupt rise in left ventricle end diastolic pressure.

Investigations-

1. Doppler echocardiography.

2. Chest x-ray.

3. Echocardiography.

4. MRI.

Management-

1. Aortic valve replacement.

2. Aortic root replacement.

3. Coronary bypass surgery.

4. Vasodilating drugs.
