Top 7 Functions of Spleen


Spleen is the largest component of the lymphatic system. It is enlarged in severe infection. The functions of the spleen are as follows-

1. The worn out red blood corpuscles are phagocytized by the free and fixed macrophages present in the spleen.
 2. It is reservoir for red blood corpuscles.
 3. The lymphocytes and monocytes are produced in the bone marrow and spleen besides thymus and lymphatic nodes.Link

Spleen produces antibodies which provide immunity.

 5. It stores iron freed from hemoglobin of worn out red blood cells.
 6. Spleen produces new red blood corpuscles in the embryo.
 7. It destroy the foreign elements entering in the blood.
