Lifestyle changes and dietary changes -
Most of the time, constipation can be cured with lifestyle and dietary modifications.
- Increase intake of fiber in diet - by adding more fruit and vegetables in diet. For example, mango, watermelon, muskmelon, grapes, pumpkin, ladyfinger, gouard in summer; dragon fruit, guava, orange, carrot, mustard greens, turnip, peas, spinach, radish, black grapes in winters, Indian blackberry, litchi, plums in monsoon season.
- Decrease intake of non vegetarian food items on daily basis - Stop eating Non-vegetarian food items for example, egg, fish, chicken on daily basis. Eat them occasionally, only once a week and that too in limited amount.
- Decrease eating or drinking of milk based products in excess - Reason being they are fiber less. Therefore, limit their intake, but not stop them. Your daily food intake, should not be limited to only milk based products. Along with milk based products, also fruits and vegetables in your diet. Limit intake of milk to 2 glass of milk in a day. Curd intake should be limited to 1 to 2 small in a day.
- Start doing morning walk daily - It will improve blood circulation in body. That will further improve your gut motility. Improved gut motility, will help in easy passage of stool from the body.
- Put small intermittent breaks of 1 to 5 minutes, when sitting for long hours - Sitting for long hours, decreases your pelvic muscles strength. Take intermittent break of 1 to 5 minutes, when sitting for long hours. In these intermittent breaks, walk for few minutes, strecth your body a little bit.
- Take less stress and do stress reducing activities - Stress also disturb your hormonal regulation. Disturbed hormonal function, further disturb your gut motility. That further disturb passage of stool from bowel. That further with passage of time, causes constipation.
- Increase intake of water to 2 to 3 litre in a day - This will improve your gut motility and also make your stool soft. That further help in easy passage of stool from your bowel.
- Sleep for 7 to 8 hours in night - Disturbed sleep or sleeping for few hours disturb your body rhythm. Body do its repair work, when we sleep. Stool movements also follow a certain pattern or body rhythm. When does not sleep enough and not in particular time, then body rhythm is disturbed. So, do is gut motility disturbed.
