Banana, if eaten in right way and right amount, then it has lot of health benefits. But, if banana is eaten in wrong way and wrong amount, then it causes harms.

Health benefits of eating banana –

Banana, has following health benefits, if eaten in right amount and right way –

  • Helps in formation and strengthening of bones – That it do by supplying good amount of calcium, phosphorus and potassium. All these three minerals, play a vital role in formation of healthy and strong bones.
  • Prevent muscle cramps – That it do by supplying good amount of magnesium. Leg cramps occur due to, lack of magnesium in our body. Banana supplies magnesium in good amount.
  • Prevent neural tube defects in baby to be born – That it do by supplying good amount of folate. Deficiency of folate causes, neural tube defects in baby during preganancy. Banana contains good amount of folate in it.
  • Maintians blood pressure in normal range – That it do by supplying good amount of potassium. Potassium helps in mainatianing blood pressure in normal range.
  • Prevent fatigue and gives energy to do work – Banana contains good amount of carbohydrates. These carbohydrates when metabolised in body, gives you energy to do work. Banana also prevent fatigue, by repelenshing the body with vital nutrients.
  • Prevents anaemia – It also prevents anaemia, by supplying good amount of iron. Deficency of iron causes anaemia. And, banana contains iron and folate, both in right amount to prevent anaemia.
  • Prevents constipation – If any body suffers from constipation, that person is advised to eat fiber rich foods. Banana contains fiber in good amount. That is why, eating banana helps prevent constipation to great extent.
  • Boost immunity – That it do, through vitamin C present in it. Vitamin C repairs and strengthens the body’s immune cells and tissues.
  • Flush out harmful free radicals out of body – That it do, due to presence of anti-oxidants present in it.  Free radicals are produced as side product in body, when food is metabolized in body. These free radicals when keep on collecting in body, then they cause chronic disease like cancer. Therefore, flushing them out of body, is very important. Antioxidants do this function of flushing out of these free radicals out of body. And, banana contains these antioxidants in very good amount, which removes free radicals out of body. 
  • Good source of electrolytes – Banana contains electrolytes like magnesium, phosphorus and potassium in good amount. That is reason, why it is commonly advised to eat banana during diarrhea, in which electrolytes loss occurs. Eating banana supplies your body with these electrolytes, which you have lost during diarrhea. Relpleshing the body with electrolytes, eliminate the fatigue and weakness, which occurs in diarrhea, due to loss of elctrolytes in repeated watery stool episodes.

Right type of banana to eat –

Always eat seasonal ripe banana, which has ripened naturally. Do not eat banana, which has been ripened with artificial methods, for example, with chemicals like calcium carbide.

Right amount of banana to eat –

As said above, banana, if eaten in right amount, has lot of health benefits. But, what is that right amount of banana to eat? You can eat, 1 to 2 banana in a day. But, if you eat banana in excess amount, then it causes harms too.

Harms of eating banana in excess amount –

Banana, if eaten in excess amount and wrong way, then it causes following harms –

  • Body weight gain – Banana contains good amount of caloreis. Banana, if eaten in excess amount, lead to consumption of caloreis in excess. Excess calories intake, without any exercise lead to weight gain.
  • Bloating - No doubt, intake of fiber in small amounts prevents constipation and improve digestion. But, over consumption of fiber can cause bloating or gas or pain in abdomen. Therefore, do not eat banana in excess amount to prevent these issues.
  • Worsen kidney problem – In impaired kidney problem, kidneys are not able to handle high dose of potassium. And, banana contains, potassium in excess amount. Therefore, do not eat banana, if you suffer from last stage of kidney failure.
  • Latex fruit syndrome – If you have allergy from banana, or suffer from latex fruit syndrome, then do not eat banana. Because, it can worsen your this problem. If you have history of itching, rash or breathlessness, after eating banana, then do not eat it.
  • Interferes with action of certain medicines – for example, blood thinner medicines, beta blockers meidinces and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.
  • Migraine – Eating banana in excess amount, causes or trigger headache or migraine in some patients. Therefore, do not eat banana  in excess amount, if you have history of headache or migraine.
  • Fructose intolerance – Banana contains fructose and sorbitol in excess amount. Therefore, people who suffer from, fructose intolerance should not eat it, because it contains fructose in good amount, which worsen their symptoms. 
  • Irritable bowel syndrome – Eating banana in excess amount cause intake of fiber in excess amount. Intake of fiber in excess amount, can worsen your problem of irritable bowel syndrome. 
  • Hyperkalemia – Banana contains potassium in excess amount. Eating banana in excess amount can worsen the symptoms of hyperkalemia.
  • Diabetes – Banana contains sugar in excess amount. Eating banana in excess amount on daily basis can cause blood sugar spike. Therefore, do not eat it in excess amount on daily basis.
