Types-
1. Primary hypersplenism.
2. Secondary hypersplenism.
1. Primary hypersplenism- In it underlying disease cannot be identified to account for the exaggerated splenic function.
· Majority of patients are females.
· Fever, frequent and recurring infections and oral ulcerations with neutropenia.
· Petechiae and ecchymoses with thrombocytopenia.
· Pallor.
· Bone marrow reveals panacellular hyperplasia.
2. Secondary hypersplenism- In it underlying disease is identified. It includes a number of diseases sharing the common feature of splenomegaly. The mechanism producing splenic enlargement are-
· Work hypertrophy from immune response. Work hypertrophy from red cell destruction, for example, spherocytosis.
· Venous congestion.
· Myeloproliferation.
· Infiltration.
· Neoplastic proliferation.
