These ulcers are caused by inadequate skin circulation. These occur in those parts of the limbs which are subjected to repeated pressure and trauma. Prolonged pressure on one part of the foot causes ischemic damage to the tissues and if the circulation is inadequate then the tissues cannot repair themselves and ischemic ulcer develops.
Causes-
1. These ulcers are mostly due to peripheral arterial disease and poor peripheral circulation.
2. Atherosclerosis of the peripheral arteries is the commonest cause of this condition.
Symptoms-
1. This condition is more often seen in old people.
2. These ulcers tend to occur on the anterior and lateral aspects of the leg, on the toes, dorsum of the foot or the heel.
3. Buerger’s disease may also present with such ulcer.
4. Patches of dry gangrene are present along with the arterial ulcer.
5. Pain is main complaint.
6. These ulcers tend to be punched out and destroy the whole skin and the deep fascia and may expose the tendons in the floor of the ulcer.
