Steps Followed in Osteoporosis Treatment



Osteoporosis like other diseases has its damaging and deteriorating effects on human body. It deteriorates bones of human body and makes them brittle, weak and porous which get fractured easily from slight fall, jerk or movement. It is a great health concern and should be treated at time with right measures. The various steps which are followed to treat osteoporosis are-



1.      Ambulatory assistive devices-
Various ambulatory assistive devices are used to give support and prevent falls of human body in established cases of osteoporosis to prevent fractures of osteoporotic bones which get easily broken from slight fall of human body. The various ambulatory devices which are used to give support and prevent falls of human body are-
a)      Walking sticks.
b)      Walking frames.

2.      Muscle strengthening and gait training exercises-
Muscle strengthening exercises and gait training exercises are used in treatment of established cases of osteoporosis.

3.      Calcium and Vitamin D nutrition-
Nutrition plays a very important role in not only prevention but also in treatment of osteoporosis. Calcium strengthens the bones weakened and made brittle and porous by osteoporosis and vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium from food. Therefore, consumption of diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is recommended to osteoporotic patients. You can have vitamin D from sunlight by sitting two hours in sunlight which synthesize vitamin D in body by activating its precursor molecules present in skin. Vitamin D is also found in various fruits and vegetables. Calcium is found in good amount in raisins, honey, cashews, radish, green vegetables, milk, curd and buttermilk and in wheat. So, include them in your diet to have osteoporosis free bones.

4.      Have protein rich diet-
Protein rich diet help in building bone tissue mass which get lost in osteoporosis. Include milk and its products like curd, in diet, also include pulses and meat in your diet chart as consumption of any of them in your diet provide good amount of protein needed to build bone tissue mass to prevent as well as treat osteoporosis.
                                                           
                          
5.      Have right amount of magnesium, fluoride and manganese-
Have right amount of magnesium, fluoride and manganese in your diet as they help in making and strengthening bone extracellular matrix.

6.      Include vitamin A, C, K and B12 rich fruits and vegetables in your diet-
Vitamin A found in carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, plums and in apples is needed for activity of osteoblasts during bone growth. Deficiency of vitamin A causes stoppage of bone growth.

Vitamin C found in citrus fruits like lemon, oranges, pineapple and various fruits like watermelon, plums, strawberries, litchi and various vegetables like potato, radish, green vegetables and in cauliflower and cabbage helps in synthesis of collagen of bone tissue and helps in early healing of fractured bones.

Vitamin K and vitamin B12 helps in synthesis of bone proteins and thus helps not only in bone growth but also helps in maintaining good bone density.

7.      Medicines-
Consult your doctor who prescribes you various anti-resorptive and bone building drugs depending upon your stage of disease osteoporosis.

8.      Hormone Replacement Therapy-
Also known as HRT which no doubt helps in maintaining bone density and also reduces rate of fractures of bone occurring due to osteoporosis, but this therapy too has its damaging side effects on heart, blood tissue and causes breast cancer.

9.      Parathyroid hormone and Calcitonin-
Both of them do help in bone growth and in maintaining bone density, but take them only under doctor’s advice as wrong dosage can harm your body.

10.  Weight bearing exercises-
Weight bearing exercises like walking, jogging, climbing stairs do help in maintaining and building bone tissue mass. Do any of these exercises on daily basis, which not only helps in treating osteoporosis but also help in preventing it.

11.  Playing tennis game-
Playing tennis game helps in treating osteoporosis, if done on daily basis, it strengthens your bones and build bone tissue mass. So, if you enjoy playing tennis, then do remember it not only gives enjoyment but also helps in keeping bone healthy.

12.  Dancing-
Dancing also help in maintaining and building bone tissue mass and hence not only prevents osteoporosis but also treats it.

13.  Resistance exercises-
Such as weight lifting do help in building muscle mass but also help in building bone strength and prevents osteoporosis.

14.  Treatment of fractures done by osteoporosis-
Fractures which occur due to osteoporosis of bones weakened by osteoporosis require treatment which is done by various non-surgical or surgical measures depending upon which bones are fractured.
