Monsoon season is very soothing and calming season enjoyed by everybody after hot, harsh and tiring season of summer. Rains which this season brings along with it cool down the atmosphere which was heated up by tiring heat of summer season. Monsoon is essential after hot, tiring and harsh summer season which has dried everything up to very extreme and rains moisten and hydrate them with its cool rainy drops. It brings back balance in environment by cooling everything with its rains which was dried and heated up by hot tiring summer season.



Monsoon season along with rains in this season also brings a bundle of healthy nutritious fruits and vegetables which helps not only in improving and maintaining health but also helps in protecting us from the various infectious diseases which get prevalent in this season. The various fruits and vegetables which it brings with it in this season is not only tasty to eat, that you would love to enjoy in rainy weather but also nourish you with various nutrients and also protects you from various infections whose causative bacteria, viruses, fungi and various other causative factors which predispose you to these infections is very much prevalent during this season.

Now, the various fruits and vegetables which you should and must eat in this monsoon season to stay healthy are as follow-

1.      Bitter gourd-

Bitter gourd also known as “Karela” in India is very health benefiting green vegetable available in this season. Health benefits of bitter gourd are so many for example it is very much rich in iron and folate. So being rich in folate and iron, bitter gourd is very good iron and folate nourishing vegetable for those people who are suffering from iron deficiency anaemia and folate deficiency. These were its just two benefits that it supplies iron and folate that is two vital nutrients to people suffering from deficiency diseases of these vital nutrients. Antioxidants present in bitter gourd helps in preventing and curing diabetes. Bitter gourd is nutritious vegetable as it contains good amount of various vital nutrients required by body for example carbohydrates, roughage, minerals like potassium, magnesium, iron, copper, folate, manganese and various vitamins. So this was in general about bitter gourd.

Now comes its monsoon related part that is which how bitter gourd helps us in monsoon season in protecting from various infections?

Bitter gourd contains a rich source of vital antioxidants required by human body. Now, how these antioxidants help in monsoon season? Now question is why one should eat it in monsoon season? What benefits will it give if we eat it in rainy season? The health benefits of eating this fruit in rainy season are so many. First benefit is that it strengthens the immune system by nourishing body with vitamin A which increases body immunity. Strengthened immune system prevents entrance of disease causing pathogens inside the body and antioxidants present in it help body fighting against disease causing pathogens and also help in flushing free radicals which are produced in body during metabolism. Anti-inflammatory properties of cherries help not only in cleaning digestive system but also help in correcting homoeostatic balance imbalanced by various inflammatory diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, influenza, cough, cold, flu, food poisoning, gastritis and stomatitis by not only treating them but also help in preventing these infectious diseases by strengthening body’s immune system and removing toxins and microbes which entered the body through the polluted water and air and through contaminated food found too much in rainy season. Antioxidant melatonin present in cherries not only helps in repairing tissue damage done by diseases but also helps in calming nerve irritation and it also produces very soothing relaxing effect on body like the cooling effect of rain drops. 3.      Peaches-

Peaches found in season of monsoon are very benefiting fruit for eyes. As you know eye flu and various infectious diseases of eye like conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis, blephritis, styes are prevalent too much during rainy season due to contaminated water and humid environment further help in providing favorable conditions to diseases causing microbes to flourish and develop more. Vitamin A and vitamin B-carotene not only helps in preventing these infectious diseases by increasing body immunity which prevents entrance of causative micro-organisms of the above infectious diseases from entering inside body but also help in fighting and treating these infectious diseases if one gets them.

Vitamin A, vitamin B and vitamin B-carotene are known to enhance eye vision and these vitamins are found in highest amount in peaches. Vitamin C is also found in good amount in this fruit which you know helps very much in increasing body immunity and thus preventing various infectious disease causing micro-organisms from entering inside our body just like vitamin A, vitamin B and B-carotene does in preventing various infectious diseases of eye. Fluoride present in peaches helps in preventing both teeth and bone caries. Peaches are also known to contain good amount of folate, iron, potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin B3 and vitamin B12. Peaches also help in improving skin texture and also helps in correcting skin tissue damage done by free radicals, various toxins, chemicals and infections to which skin is exposed on daily basis and chances of suffering from infectious diseases of skin are more in rainy season as the humid atmosphere of monsoon provide appropriate and favorable environmental conditions for the disease causing viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites to flourish on skin surface.

Plums are maroonish colour fruit round in shape about the size of peaches and look like peaches in appearance from outside. Plums contain good amount of fiber which helps in treating and preventing indigestion, diarrhoea and dysentery prevalent diseases found too much in rainy season due to sudden heavy oily food consumption from juicy and light diet of summer. Plums are also known to contain good amount of vitamin C which you know increases our body’s resistance against various infectious diseases and prevents entry of various disease causing agents from entering inside our body. Vitamin C is also known to clean our digestive system, so helps in flushing out various toxins and free radicals out of body and also known to increase body immunity against various gastrointestinal diseases.
 

5.      Capsicum-

Capsicum being green vegetable is rich in iron, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C, carbohydrates, roughage and various healthy nutrients required by body. It contains good amount of starch. Carbohydrates present in capsicum provide appropriate energy need required by the body on digestion and various antioxidants present in it helps in preventing various infectious diseases prevalent during rainy season. Roughage present in capsicum prevents diarrhoea, dysentery prevalent in rainy season. It also provide good amount of iron so help in healthy formation of red blood cells.


6.      Ladyfinger-

Ladyfinger although bitter in taste but very beneficial in preventing diabetes, anaemia, dysentery, diarrhoea, constipation and supplies the body with good amount of nutrients like carbohydrates, starch, sodium, manganese, zinc, copper, magnesium, potassium and a little bit of protein but no fat at all. As it contain no fat so therefore is very good healthy food option for those who want to lose weight this rainy season.
