What are Different Treatment Options Available for Treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome?



Dry eye syndrome is a syndrome of eye in which eyes are not in healthy condition, infact they are in diseased condition and patient usually complain of set of symptoms known collectively as dry eye syndrome.


Now, question is what are these set of symptoms which are collectively known as dry eye syndrome? What are the symptoms of dry eye syndrome that I have already explained in article “Do you know what are different symptoms of dry eye syndrome?” and if you are wondering how it is caused, what are its causes? Then it is given in this article titled “What is dry eye syndrome and what are its different causes?”

Now, question of this article was what are different treatment options available for treatment of dry eye syndrome? The different treatment options available for treatment of dry eye syndrome are:-

1.      Artificial tear eye drops-
Eye drops known by the name of artificial tear eye drops are used as substitute tears which lubricate eyes and also moisten them. But do not use it without doctor’s advice. Only use them under your doctor’s advice. Using it yourself without doctor’s advice can harm your eyes as doctor better knows when to prescribe these eye drops and what is right dose and when to use it and for how long you should use these eye drops and when to stop them.

2.      Eye surgery-
There are also some different eye surgery options available for treating dry eye syndrome and these are-
           i)         Lacrisert.
           ii)        Heat cautery- permanently sealing the opening of tear ducts using heat cautery.

3.      Treating inflammation of eyelids if any present.

4.      Drink more water which helps in improving not only general hydration of body but also of eyes.

5.      Balanced diet for dry eye syndrome-
What is balanced diet for dry eye syndrome? Balanced diet for dry eye syndrome must include omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. Omega-3-fatty acids are found in flax seeds in vegetarian category of food and in salmon fish in non-vegetarian category of food.

6.      Take frequent breaks in between while working on computer or doing any fine print work like sewing, reading, watching television for prolonged hours or using mobiles, laptops or iPods for prolonged hours as using them for prolonged hours without taking any break in between puts constant strain on eyes which is harmful and causes dry eye syndrome. So take frequent breaks in between if you need to use computer, laptops, iPods, mobiles or doing sewing work or to watch television for prolonged hours, then never forget to take frequent breaks in between these prolonged hours schedule.

7.      If you are suffering from dry eye syndrome then avoid sitting in front of car heaters, fans and air-conditioners as sitting in front of car heater, air-conditioners and fans brings forth direct blowing of air into eyes and if you are sitting in front of car-heaters, air-conditioners and fans for prolonged hours, then you are receiving this direct blowing of air into your eyes for prolonged hours which causes dry eye syndrome.

 

8.      Use humidifier to add moisture to air of your room as humid environment gives best comfort to dry eyes suffering from dry eye syndrome. Humid environment best suits to dry eyes; it ameliorates dry eyes whereas too much exposure to sun, wind and dust aggravates the eyes. So wear your sunglasses which properly and appropriately cover the eyes if you need to go outdoors which reduces excessive exposure of eyes to sun, wind and also prevents dust from entering into eyes.

9.      While swimming, wear your swim goggles which prevent repeated splashes of water into eyes, as these repeated splashes of water instead of giving any relief to eyes, on the opposite worsen the dry eyes condition of dry eye syndrome much more. So, wear your swim goggles, when going for swimming to prevent repeated splashes of water during swimming from entering inside eyes as these repeated splashes of water only worsen the dry eye syndrome and do not give any relief.

10.  Stop smoking and avoid air polluted areas as they not only worsen dry eye condition of your eyes but also causes dry eye syndrome and further deteriorates your eyes.

11.  Avoid long term contact lens wear as they only worsen your dry eye condition and also predisposes the eyes to dry eye syndrome.
