Pseudomembranous colitis also known as antibiotic associated colitis is caused due to a toxin produced by Clostridium difficilewhen the normal bacterial flora is altered or suppressed by antibiotics. It usually occurs in adults.
Symptoms-
2. Profuse watery diarrhoea.
3. Abdominal pain.
4. Yellowish membrane known as pseudomembrane made up of fibrin and polymorphs is found adherent to the eroded mucosa of rectum and colon.
Investigations-
2. Sigmoidoscopy.
3. Rectal biopsy.
