Reiter’s syndrome is a syndrome in which there occurs non-specific urethritis, conjunctivitis and arthritis, two to four weeks after enteric or urogenital infections.
Causes-
1. Histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27.
2. Causative micro-organisms are Shigella, Salmonella, Yersinia and Campylobacter, Streptococcus pyogenes.
Symptoms-
1. Acute onset of arthritis affecting joints of lower limbs in an asymmetrical fashion.
2. Enthesitis and dactylitis.
3. Keratoderma blennorrhagica which is hyperkeratotic lesions found on the palms of hands or soles of feet.
4. Fatigue, weight loss, fever.
5. Urethritis, acute haemorrhagic cystitis.
6. Conjunctivitis.
Investigations-
1. ESR test.
2. Hb test.
3. TLC, DLC tests.
4. Synovial fluid test.
5. Serological tests.
6. RA factor test.
7. X-ray of affected joints.
