An aortic aneurysm is an abnormal dilatation of the aortic wall.
Types-
1. Non-specific aneurysms.
2. Marfan’s syndrome.
3. Aortitis.
4. Thoracic aneurysms.
5. Abdominal aortic aneurysms.
1. Non-specific aneurysms- tend to run in families. The most common site for non specific aneurysm formation is the infrarenal abdominal aorta.
2. Marfan’s syndrome- is caused by mutations in the fibrillin gene on chromosome 15. Symptoms of marfan’s syndrome are-
· Arachnodactyly.
· Joint hypermobility.
· Scoliosis.
· Chest deformity.
· High arched palate.
· Dislocation of lens.
· Aortic disease.
· Mitral regurgitation.
3. Aortitis- conditions that cause aortitis and aneurysm formation are-
· Reiter’s syndrome.
· Ankylosing spondylitis.
4. Thoracic aneurysms- produce chest pain. It cause aortic valve regurgitation, hemorrhage.
5. Abdominal aortic aneurysms- it affects men more than women.
