Secondary Amenorrhea


Secondary amenorrhea is the cessation of menstruation.



Causes-

1. Pregnancy.

2. Menopause.

3. Hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism.

4. Ovarian dysfunction.

5. Polycystic ovarian disease.

6. Asherman’s syndrome.

7. Hypothalamic or pituitary disease and premature ovarian failure result in oestrogen deficiency, which causes a variety of symptoms usually associated with menopause. 

8. If there is weight loss, then this may be primary as in anorexia nervosa or secondary to underlying disease such as tuberculosis or malabsorption.




Investigations-

1. HCG.

2. LH.

3. FSH.

4. Oestradiol.

5. Prolactin.

6. Testosterone.

7. T4 and TSH.

8. DEXA scan.
