Achalasia of oesophagus occurs at any age but it usually affects middle age patients. There is hypertonic lower oesophageal sphincter. There is failure of propagated oesophageal contraction.
Symptoms-
1. Dysphagia.
2. Severe chest pain.
3. Nocturnal pulmonary aspiration.
Investigations-
1. Chest x-ray.
2. Barium swallow.
3. Endoscopy.
Management-
1. Surgical myotomy.
2. Heller’s myotomy.
3. Proton pump inhibitor.
4. Medicines.
