Dilated Cardiomyopathy


Dilated cardiomyopathy is a cardiovascular disease in which there is enlargement of the ventricle and impairment of the ventricular contraction, usually affecting both ventricles.


Causes-

1.      Autoimmune diseases.
2.      Inflammation.
3.      Thiamine and selenium deficiency.
4.      Diabetes mellitus.
5.      Thyrotoxicosis.
6.      Hypothyroidism.
7.      Sickle cell anemia.
8.      Toxicological causes or toxins.
9.      Alcoholism.
10.  Muscular dystrophies.
11.  Idiopathic in nature.

Symptoms-

1.      Left sided heart failure.
2.      Right sided heart failure in advanced stage of disease.
3.      Arrhythmia.
4.       Systemic embolisation of left ventricular mural thrombi.
5.      Pulmonary embolism.
6.      Raised jugular venous pressure.
7.      Cardiomegaly, third and fourth heart sounds.

Investigations-

1.      Chest x-ray.
2.      ECG.
3.      Echocardiography.
4.      Angiography.
