Tropical Sprue


Tropical sprue is a malabsorption syndrome occurring in patients of tropics in the absence of other intestinal disease or parasites.


Causes-

1.      Usually the cause is unknown.
2.      E.coli, Klebsiella and Enterobacter are suspected micro-organisms.
3.      Folic acid deficiency is also one of the suspected factors.

Symptoms-

1.      Partial villous atrophy in jejunum.
2.      Diarrhoea in initial stage of disease.
3.      Spontaneous remission of disease symptoms may occur.
4.      Flatulent abdomen and loss of appetite.
5.      Weight loss and fatigue.
6.      Megaloblastic anaemia, oedema and glossitis are also there.
7.      Inflammation of stomach.

Investigations-

1.      Stool test.
2.      Hb test.
3.      Peripheral blood smear test.
4.      ESR test.
5.      Serum albumin test.
6.      Lipid profile test.
7.      Jejunal biopsy.
