Spontaneous Pneumothorax

Pneumothorax is a type of respiratory disease in which there is found air in the pleural cavity. Primary spontaneous pneumothoarx affects people especially between the age group of twenty to forty years.

Causes-


1. Rupture of subpleural belbs at the lung apices.

2. Rupture of emphysematous bullae, subpleural tuberculous focus and rupture of lung abscess.


3. Bronchial carcinoma.

4. Bronchial asthma.

5. Pulmonary infarction.


Types-

Spontaneous pneumothorax is of three types which are as follow-

1. Closed spontaneous pneumothorax.

2. Open spontaneous pneumothorax.

3. Tension pneumothorax.


Symptoms-

1. Usually small pneumothorax is asymptomatic, that is it shows no symptoms.

2. In symptomatic cases, there is sudden onset of chest pain and dyspnoea is there.

3. Cyanosis.

4. Rapid thready pulse, peripheral circulatory failure in severe cases.

5. Shift of trachea and mediastinum to opposite side, diminished to absent breath sounds.

6. Sharply defined edge of deflated lung.

7. Increase in the size of affected hemithorax.
